AI Agent services (vAST)

AI Agent services and MCP Server Documentation

Introduction

This document details the implementation and usage of the MCP (Model Context Protocol) server for viaNexus. The MCP server is designed to enable efficient and reliable processing of data through AI Agentic workflow connectivity. This includes facilitating the connection of AI agents and/or LLMs, such as Anthropic's Claude, to provide direct agentic access to viaNexus data for applications like AI chat assistants and/or AI Agentic workflows.

Overview

The viaNexus MCP server acts as an intermediary between viaNexus data api and AI Agentic connectivity:

  • Receiving and queuing any dataset data.
  • Authenticating and authorizing client connections.
  • Distributing messages to subscribing clients based on their entitlements and permissions.
  • Providing alerting mechanisms on data events

Usage examples:

  • “What are the latest price for NVIDIA?”
  • “Provide me with a comprehensive news update for the MAG7.”
  • “Alert me when there’s a new news headline for any stocks in the MAG7, and send me the articles”
  • “Delete my alerts for NVIDIA and Apple.”

Requirements

  1. A compatible MCP client (Claude.ai, Cursor, an app that uses the viaNexus Agent Python SDK , or any client that has implemented an MCP client using OAuth2 supporting MCP 6/18 auth spec )
  2. An account of MT Newswires products provided by viaNexus financial data platform.

Connecting to MCP Server

The MCP server is available at: https://vast-mcp.blueskyapi.com/mcp

This server requires authentication with your account on the viaNexus platform. When connecting, you will be prompted to authorize using the username/password that was created or provided on the viaNexus platform.

Using with Claude.ai

Note: Requires Claude Enterprise or Teams, and the connection must be set up by a Workspace Owner or Primary Owner in Claude before users will be able to connect

For Claude.ai Admins

Only Workspace Owners and Primary Owners can set up MCP server connections in Claude.ai:

  1. Go to Settings in Claude.ai
  2. Navigate to the "Connectors" section
  3. Click "Admin Settings"
  4. Click “Add Custom Connector”
  5. Enter "viaNexus" as the Name
  6. Enter https://vast-mcp.blueskyapi.com/mcp as the Server URL
  7. Click "Add"
  8. Authenticate with your MT Newswires account via OAuth2 form
For Claude.ai Users

After your admin has set up the integration:

  1. Navigate to claude.ai
  2. Go to Settings located at lower left corner in your account drop down
  3. Select "viaNexus" from the list of available Connectors
  4. If this is your first time using the connectors, you'll be prompted to authenticate
  5. Once authenticated, you can start using Claude with viaNexus

Using with Cursor

Cursor connects to viaNexus with an API key rather than OAuth. You will need a viaNexus API key (sk_...) generated from your console.

Option A - add the configuration manually

Add the following to ~/.cursor/mcp.json to make viaNexus available in every project, or to .cursor/mcp.json inside a single project:

{ "mcpServers": { "vianexus": { "url": "https://vast.blueskyapi.com/vianexus/mcp", "headers": { "x-api-key": "${env:VIANEXUS_API_KEY}" } } } }

Then set your key in your shell and restart Cursor:

export VIANEXUS_API_KEY=sk_your_key_here

To confirm the server loaded, run mcp tool list in a Cursor chat. You should see the vianexus server listed.

The named server under mcpServers is required. A bare { "url": ..., "headers": ... } object is not valid in mcp.json and Cursor will fail to load it.

Option B - install from cursor.directory

Open cursor.directory/plugins/vianexus-vast and click Add to Cursor.

Two things to be aware of on that page:

  • The configuration preview shown there omits the mcpServers wrapper, so it cannot be pasted into mcp.json as-is. Use the snippet in Option A instead.
  • Installing from that page currently registers the server under the name server. This is a known issue with the directory and does not affect whether the connection works. You can rename it in mcp.json.

viaNexus is listed on cursor.directory, the community plugin directory. It is not listed in Cursor's built-in marketplace (Settings, Open Customize, Browse Marketplace), so searching there will not find it.

Using with other supported MCP Clients or the viaNexus SDK

To connect to the MCP server using your customer MCP client, you can do the following(after creating an account):

  • Use the viaNexus SDK which will facilitate connectivity and add additional facilities to your client/agent such as agnostic LLM connectivity, DCR support, callback server, memory(short or long term), contextual persistence and integrated OAuth2 using MCP auth spec 6/18 automagically.
  • Minimally an MCP client that supports and complies to the following:
